Rob McAllen: An Introduction
Well, here I am. 45 years old and teaching yoga. So, yoga is my midlife crisis. No fancy sports car, no women half my age, just yoga. The ironic thing is that yoga has helped me feel half my age. I am in better shape now than I have been since high school, when I was playing three different sports. So I started this business for one sole purpose: to make yoga more approachable to anyone and everyone, and to present it in a way that is not intimidating and makes sense to everyday people. I want to bust through all of the stereotypes that people have created about yoga. It has been an amazing path I have followed to get here, and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Growing up, I participated in team sports. Football, baseball, and basketball filled my time throughout my younger years. Working with a group of people to accomplish one goal helped me learn and develop a sense of competition. After high school and college my search for competition led me to running. Participating in everything from 5Ks to marathons helped feed my need for it. Then came triathlons, sprints, then a Half-Ironman. While training for this Half-Ironman I turned to yoga for relief from minor injuries. My results in my races improved, as well as my attitude. Yoga was helping my entire body, as well as my mind. In fact, yoga taught me to listen to my body—and not my mind—to remove the competitive instinct and let things happen naturally, as they should. These days I do more yoga than running, cycling, or swimming but my entire body is in better shape, mind included. I may not be able to run or cycle when I am 80 years old, but I will be able to do yoga.
Now I feel like I have been given a gift to teach yoga, and I want to share that gift with anyone who will listen. This blog will serve as one place for that sharing, so keep an eye here for my musings, schedule updates, and much more.
